Training of the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy members within the campaign “Life is in your hands”

The spirit of the upcoming New Year’s and Christmas holidays fails to slow down the work and activities of members and associates of the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy. As part of the “Life is in Your Hands” campaign, members of the Center together with specialists in Sports Medicine and Ph.D. students in the module of doctoral academic studies Applied Research in Sports Medicine and Motor Skills attended the second training course to obtain an instructor certificate in the field of training the sports experts in the first aid in a situation of sudden cardiac arrest. This course was organized on Saturday, December 25th, 2021. in the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy, at the Institute of Medical Physiology, Medical Faculty in Belgrade.

The campaign “Life is in your hands” is organized by the Olympic Committee of Serbia and the Serbian Red Cross under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia. This campaign aims to train athletes and sports professionals (coaches and physiotherapists) in cardiopulmonary resuscitation measures and the use of external automated defibrillators. It is planned that the campaign includes as many sports federations and sports associations throughout the Republic of Serbia. The support of elite athletes who recorded promotional material also speaks of the importance of the campaign. In addition to members of the Serbian Red Cross, the training will be conducted by trained doctors – instructors of various specialties (specialists in Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine, etc.), as well as our doctoral students.

All participants in the training were greeted by the President of the Serbian Red Cross, Prof. Dr. Dragan Radovanović, also a doctor of the Olympic Committee of Serbia. In his interview for several media houses, which followed this education, prof. Dr. Radovanović emphasized the importance of conducting this campaign in order to prevent sudden cardiac death on the sports field and training as many direct participants in sports who are directly present on the field. Only the joint activities of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia, the Olympic Committee of Serbia, and the Serbian Red Cross will provide adequate education for doctors and sports experts who are on the front line of reaction to all sports events.

We are glad that the long-standing cooperation that exists between the members of the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy and the Serbian Red Cross continues within large projects such as the “Life is in Your Hands” campaign. We plan to organize a few more courses like this in the future. Only through joint teamwork will we be able to create a safe environment for athletes, sports experts, and their loyal followers and fans.

Training of members of the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy within the campaign “Life is in your hands”

The arrival of the winter months and snowfall fails to slow down the activities of members and associates of the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy. As part of the “Life is in Your Hands” campaign, which is slowly “heating up” in the Serbian Red Cross, members of the Laboratory together with Sports Medicine residents attended the first training course to obtain an instructor certificate in the field of training the sports experts in the first aid in a situation of sudden cardiac arrest.

Numerous unfortunate events of sudden cardiac arrest at sports events, both among athletes and spectators, which became more frequent during the COVID 19 pandemic, encouraged the development of the campaign “Life is in your hands” by joint efforts and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia, Olympic Committee Of Serbia and the Serbian Red Cross. Campagne provides training for sports professionals (coaches and therapists), in providing the first aid in situations of sudden cardiac arrest. It is planned that the campaign includes as many sports federations and societies in Serbia, in cooperation with prominent Serbian athletes.

In addition to members of the Serbian Red Cross, the training will be conducted by trained doctors – instructors of various specialties (specialists in Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine, etc.). The training of doctors – instructors began with a course organized in the Serbian Red Cross on Wednesday, December 15th, 2021., which was successfully mastered by the youngest members of the Laboratory. With a collage of photos, we will try to evoke a part of the very positive atmosphere at the mentioned course.

The next training course for doctors – instructors is planned for Saturday, December 25th, 2021. in the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy in Višegradska 26.

We hope that the new chapter in the long-standing cooperation between the Department of Sports Medicine (and the Center of Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy) and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia, the Olympic Committee of Serbia, and the Serbian Red Cross will contribute to an increased number of positive outcomes during sudden cardiac arrest at sports events. Through this teamwork, we want to create a safe environment for athletes, sports experts, and their loyal companions and fans.

Pre-Participation examinations of the Medical Faculty students who compete in the University League

In the last days of October, members of the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy team organized and conducted Pre-Participation examinations of students of the Medical Faculty in Belgrade who compete in the University League. Despite the difficult conditions due to the current epidemiological situation, the members of the Center successfully and safely examined 50 male and female students to determine their ability to practice sports activities.

We are very proud to point out that during these examinations we were able to use the Posturokit device system, which detects and analyzes posture disorders. The Posturokit system consists of a positioner – laser system that assesses the existence of asymmetry in the frontal and sagittal body plane, a podoscope that assesses the existence of asymmetry in the points of support of the whole foot, toes, and heels, and a foam platform which assesses limb movement coordination in the presence and absence of visual and auditory stimuli. The Posturokit system was developed by the YUODOME company based in Monte Carlo, Monaco. YUODOME company is a world leader in the production of metric systems and software with the main goal of improving the performance of elite athletes. Some of the athletes who successfully use YUODOME products in their training are Ben Rawlins (triathlon) and Claire Tetard (sailing).

The Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy received the opportunity to use the latest generation Posturokit system thanks to a selfless borrow of Posturokit equipment from the Djokovic Foundation, whose founder is our prominent tennis player and world number 1 on the ATP list, Novak Djokovic. This equipment has greatly improved the offer of services of our Center, but also the possibility of collecting invaluable material that can be used to conduct scientific research studies.

The Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise Therapy expresses great gratitude to its valuable friends prof. Dr. Nebojsa Popovic, who helped reopen and rebranding of the Center, as well as the Djokovic Foundation on a selfless borrow and the opportunity to be part of major world scientific studies that assess the posture of elite athletes. Thanks to our dear friends, every day we make new and very important steps in breaking through the Sports Medicine of Serbia on the world scientific-research scene.

Radnički Handball Club is the most trophy-winning women’s club in the history of Yugoslavian and Serbian sports. For a quarter of a century (period 1970-1994), the handball players of Radnički won 32 trophies (out of a total of 33 in their history), 14 national champion titles, 12 domestic cup trophies, and were European champions three times (1976, 1980, 1984),  and Cup winners (1986, 1991, 1992). On four more occasions, they reached the finals of the Champions Cup (1981-1983, 1985).

It is a great honor for us that HC Radnički gave the trust to check the health of its members to our Center and its members. We hope that the organization of these examinations is the beginning of long-term cooperation between the two institutions with a long and successful experience in the areas of their work.

Under this scholarship, Dr. Krzman has obtained a diploma from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the field of Sports Medicine, which opened the door to cooperation with numerous world experts in the field of Sports Medicine and elite athletes.
